How to layout your furniture to make the most of a small living space
Whether you live in a studio apartment or you’re just trying to make the most of a small room in your home, when you don’t have a lot of space to play with it can be difficult knowing how to arrange it. Don’t confuse being short of space with meaning you have to be short on style too; there are ranges of furnishing options that are specifically created for homes with minimal storage solutions. We’ve written this blog all about how to layout your furniture to maximise and get the most from your available space, taking it from cramped and claustrophobic to chilled-out and cosy.
1: Buy multi-tasking furniture.
Furniture that can double up as something else is an essential requirement in compact houses and apartments; any furniture that you purchase must be both functional and comfortable. Why trying squeezing in two pieces of furniture when you can save space – and money – just buying one? At The Leather Sofa Shop, we create high quality sofas that can be transformed in to a wonderfully comfy sofa bed. Contact our sales team for more information and to discuss your requirements.
2: Mirror, Mirror, on the wall.
Mirrors are another essential piece in a compact living arrangement. Choosing a mirror with character will add depth to your home, whilst also imitating space and framing key features. Where possible, hang your mirrors opposite windows to reflect the light back around the room for the best outcome. In the bedroom we would recommend a full length mirror the opposite side of the room from your window. In the bathroom, a small mirror (or better yet, a cabinet with mirror on the front) placed below a wall mounted lamp will add charm and charisma.
3: Take advantage of vertical space.
Swapping box blinds for long, draping curtains gives the illusion of flowing vertical space. Tall bookcases are a good storage option and there’s a wide variety of storage units and bookcases, where the lower shelves pull out to double as steps to reach the higher shelves.
4: Don’t forget the corners.
It’s easy to underestimate the corners of your room but instead why not utilise them? We love corner furniture and it is a huge trend for 2017 that is here to stay. We manufacture a range of bespoke corner sofa suites that can be altered to match your requirements, combining comfort with maximum lounging space.

5: Use neutral colour schemes.
We all love a trendy black or navy, dark colour scheme but it only makes a compact space look even smaller. Using neutral colours in your home reflects natural light making the room seem bigger. Accessorise with colours though so it doesn’t look too bare or clinical, for example by adding scatter cushions and chunky throws with interesting patterns or contrasting colours such as orange, which will add warm tones throughout your home (avoid cool colours like blue or purple). Don’t forget at The Leather Sofa Shop, we can upholster our furniture in a variety of leathers, with different colours and finishes, you can order samples online for free.
At The Leather Sofa Shop we create bespoke leather sofa and armchair suites specifically to the clients’ requirements. We have an alterations service that allows us to cater for modifications to the cushion fill, arms, feet and base. If small space is an issue for you, we can remove the feet and arms from your sofa by unbolting them to fit it through your door and re-attach them once we have placed the sofa in your home, without compromising its structural integrity. We are so confident in our craftsmanship that we offer a 5 year guarantee against manufacturing faults but if that doesn’t convince you, contact a member of our sales team to book a visit of our Manchester based factory showroom and see the high quality of our products for yourself.
